Are energy drinks dangerous for kids?

Parenting Perspective

It requires educated decisions and Islamic self-control to shun dangerous substances, such as energy drinks, particularly among children and adolescents. Energy drinks tend to have high levels of caffeine, sugars, and artificial flavourings that can impact heart health, sleep, mood, and concentration. Islam instructs us to shun harm and excess, particularly if the harmful effects overcome the benefit. Get your child to have water, milk, or fruit juices and make them understand the physical and spiritual damage caused by depending on stimulants. Children are attracted to energy drinks because of peer pressure or advertisements; handle them with love and give them better options. Healthy choices are integral to Taqwa and a gesture of respect towards the body, which is a trust bestowed upon us by Allah Almighty.

Spiritual Insight

Allah Almighty says in the noble Quran at Surah Al Aa’raaf (7), Verse 31: ‘…And eat and drink and do not be extravagant (wasteful), as indeed, He (Allah Almighty) does not like extravagance.’ It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 5199, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: ‘Your body has a right over you.’ It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1599, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: ‘The lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear… and between them are doubtful matters…’ These teachings encourage caution and moderation, making it clear that harmful or doubtful products like energy drinks should be avoided by children.
